The Shopify Mixed Cart Deadlock Is a Platform Choice
A Shopify mixed cart with pickup and shipping items blocks checkout entirely. That is not a bug. Shopify evaluates delivery at the order level.

Twenty Shopify Community threads. Four separate Shopify Staff replies spanning 2021 through 2025. More than five years of merchants describing the same checkout failure, from a farm in 2022 to a cafe in 2024 to a florist developer this past June. One behaviour: a Shopify mixed cart with a pickup-only item next to a shippable item throws "Shipping not available" for the whole order and no customer can get past it. One root cause: the checkout evaluates delivery at the order level, not the line-item level. One native fix, which arrived in June 2026 and is gated to Shopify Plus and Enterprise.
We think the mixed-cart deadlock is being misread as a Shopify bug. It is not. It is a design choice, and the choice is now being monetised. That is what this post is about.
Quick answer: A Shopify mixed cart that contains both a pickup-only product and a shippable product cannot complete checkout on Basic or Grow plans. The actual fix - "Ship and pickup in one order" - is in Feature Test Drive for Plus and Enterprise merchants only, with an auto-release to "all eligible checkouts" scheduled for July 2027. The word "eligible" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Everything else in community threads is a workaround with a real cost.
Why everyone keeps calling it a bug
The first time a merchant hits this, it reads like a configuration error. The product has inventory. The shipping profile looks fine. The customer is in the delivery zone. And still checkout stalls with "Shipping not available" for the entire order. The merchant edits the shipping zone, checks weights, sets up a second profile, tries incognito, asks a friend to test, and nothing changes. Then they email support and get told to try the empty-shipping-profile workaround.
That workaround is the one a Shopify Staff member (Shay) recommended in March 2022: create a shipping profile for the pickup-only items with a zone and no rates. In the same thread, four separate merchants - duane029, Briercrest, FarmerStacey, and a 2023 follow-up - came back to say the "Ship" option still appeared at checkout and the deadlock still happened. We cannot find a single merchant in any of the twenty threads who confirmed that workaround working. The official recommendation and the reality drifted apart years ago and no newer Staff reply has fixed the gap.
So the first failure mode of this problem is social, not technical: Shopify behaves one way, the recommended fix assumes it behaves another way, and the merchant is caught in between. Of course they call it a bug. Every Shopify mixed cart complaint we sampled from the last five years starts in roughly this same place.
The deadlock is a design choice, confirmed in writing
In September 2025, a Shopify Staff member (PieLab) wrote on the Community forum: "Shopify's native settings cannot restrict shipping per-product." A helper in the same thread (Channelwill) added the clean version: "Shopify operates at order-level, not product-level." BjornD (a Community Helper, March 2026): "A customer can't mix shipped and pickup items in the same order - they'd need to place two separate orders."
Those three sentences, by three different people, in three different threads, over eighteen months, are the spec. The checkout evaluates delivery methods against the cart as a unit. There is no code path that fulfils a single order with pickup for item A and shipping for item B. There is also no admin toggle to mark an item "pickup only" at the product level. The absence is not accidental; it is what has to be true for the platform to work the way the rest of Shopify assumes orders work (one shipping address, one order confirmation, one fulfilment).
A Shopify mixed cart is therefore an outcome Shopify's architecture does not model. Calling it a bug is the start of a long search for a fix that does not exist on standard plans.
"Split shipping in checkout" is the wrong headline
Here is the part that drives us slightly up a wall. In August 2024, Shopify shipped a feature called "Split shipping in checkout" and listed it as available to all merchants with more than one shipping profile or location. Multiple 2025 and 2026 threads cite that changelog entry as the mixed-cart fix. The feature does something else entirely.
"Split shipping in checkout" tells a customer when their order will arrive in several packages and lets them accelerate specific packages. All items still ship. It is a presentation feature on an all-shipping order. Mixing pickup and shipping in the same checkout is a different feature called "Ship and pickup in one order", and that one did not reach developer preview until 2025 and did not move to Feature Test Drive until June 2026, Plus and Enterprise only.
If you have landed on this post because you read the 2024 changelog and could not get it to do what the headline implied, that is the gap. The feature you want is a different one that did not exist on your plan in 2024, and does not exist on your plan today.
None of the real workarounds are good
We counted the ones that actually appear in the twenty threads. Here is the honest shape of them, for a merchant on Basic or Grow.
| Workaround | Where it works | Where it breaks |
|---|---|---|
| Delete all shipping rates (force pickup-only) | Pure-pickup stores | Any store that also wants to ship a mug or a t-shirt |
| Mark everything non-physical | Pure-pickup stores | Same as above |
| Add a shipping rate to pickup items (even a real one) | Mixed carts complete | Some pickup orders get actually shipped |
| 1000kg weight hack with prohibitive rates | Reliable until you run a shipping promo | Breaks the first time you offer free shipping over $N |
| Zapiet | Hides the wrong delivery option on the cart page | Two separate orders are still required at checkout |
| Checkout Blocks for conditional hiding | Plus only | Not an option on Basic or Grow |
| Custom Shopify Functions | Any plan with a developer | Costs real money; one developer in these threads called it "substantial custom development" |
| Language settings customization (change the error) | Reduces confused support tickets | Does not resolve the deadlock itself |
| Two-order checkout flow with a product-page notice | Universally applicable | Customer has to understand, follow through, and pay shipping and tax twice |
A real Shopify mixed cart workaround for a Basic or Grow store lives somewhere on this grid, and the honest ranking depends on the shape of the catalogue. If you are a farm or bakery that mostly sells for pickup and occasionally wants to ship a branded hoodie, the two-order flow plus a prominent product-page note is where we would start, specifically because every other option breaks silently and this one at least fails loud. If you run a shop that depends on Printify or Shopify Collective, you are already selling only shippable items in that part of the catalogue and the deadlock does not apply there - but adding any local-pickup inventory alongside those partners re-creates the problem on contact. There is no clean answer. We would rather you know that going in than pay to find out.
If you are trying to decide which of these is least bad for your store, and you want a second pair of eyes before Black Friday, that is exactly what help1's expert chat is for. We have seen this pattern often enough that the first 15 minutes is usually plenty to pick a workaround and plan the customer-messaging that goes with it.
What the Plus-only fix really tells us
Sharon_C (Shopify Staff) announced on June 17, 2026 that "Ship and pickup in one order" has moved from developer preview to Feature Test Drive. The announcement is explicit: Plus and Enterprise during the test window, auto-release to "all eligible checkouts" in July 2027. "Eligible" is the word doing the work in that sentence. No Shopify Staff response in any thread we have read commits to that scope including Basic, Shopify, or Grow.
In the same thread, a developer (SLASHCARTS) said they had already built the equivalent custom functionality for a floral client three weeks before the announcement, and described it as "substantial custom development for fulfillment splitting and notifications." That is the real cost of the thing Shopify is now releasing to Plus. For five years, every workaround has been a shim because the right implementation is non-trivial, and non-trivial engineering work is what Shopify is now packaging as a Plus-tier capability.
That is a defensible business decision. It is also a decision. Treating this as a known limitation your Basic plan will not get is more useful than treating it as a bug Shopify is about to fix. The one audience Shopify has told, in writing, when and how this gets resolved is Plus. Everyone else is reading tea leaves off the word "eligible".
We will note the counterargument fairly: Shopify shipped "Split shipping in checkout" to everyone in 2024, and "Ship and carryout" to POS in 2025, and the trajectory of smaller delivery features has in fact been toward broader availability over time. It is plausible that July 2027 does bring this to standard plans. We are not willing to plan a store around that plausibility on October 2026, and we do not think you should either. If you need pickup-and-shipping-in-one-order today, the honest answer is: build the two-order flow, write the clear product-page note, change the error-message language, and move on. The platform will catch up or it will not.
The one caveat on this take: we have not personally tested the Plus Feature Test Drive. If you are on Plus and in the test window, your experience of the native path may already be better than any of the workarounds in the grid above, and the trade-off calculus flips. For everyone else, where the Shopify mixed cart problem is a lived weekly cost rather than a solved one, read on.
Here is the question we would ask yourself before building any of this. If a customer today adds a pickup-only candle and a shippable mug to their cart and hits "Shipping not available," which costs you more over the next six months - the twenty seconds of customer confusion you fix with a language-settings edit, the engineering hours it would take to split the cart in code, or the Plus-plan upgrade that gives you the native fix in some unknown month? For most help1 merchants we have talked to, the answer is "the engineering hours, by a mile," which is why the two-order flow plus a clear note on the product page keeps winning in the small-merchant category even though it looks like the ugliest option on the grid. Our free diagnostic app will flag the mixed-cart shape of this problem on scan, but the hard call is which cost you are willing to carry.
