What EU Merchants Hit When Adding Shopify Pickup Points

A field read of what EU merchants hit when adding Shopify pickup points: the country wall, the plan wall, and which apps now work on any plan.

What EU Merchants Hit When Adding Shopify Pickup Points

Around 83% of Polish online shoppers pick a parcel locker over home delivery when the store lets them, and Poland alone has roughly 70,000 lockers across InPost, DPD, DHL, ORLEN Paczka, and Pocztex. Shopify pickup points, in their native form, as of October 2026, work in four markets: France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. That is the gap most of our EU conversations begin with. The rest of this piece is what we actually see when merchants try to close it.

We are writing this from the help1 side of the chat: we talk to solo and small-team merchants who have already Googled, read the Community threads, installed one app, uninstalled it, and arrived at the "please just tell me what to do" stage. The patterns below are what keeps repeating.

The country wall is four markets wide, and Royal Mail did not widen it

The first wall is geographic. Shopify's native carrier pickup support at checkout, where a map or list of nearby lockers and parcel shops appears inside the shipping step, is enabled in France, Italy, Spain, and the UK only. The eligible carriers inside those four countries are Chronopost, Colissimo, Correos, Evri, Mondial Relay, Poste Italiane, and, since October 15, 2026, Royal Mail Post Office branches and Customer Service Points.

That Royal Mail addition is worth naming carefully, because we have had merchants in Poland and the Netherlands read the changelog and conclude that their market is next. It is not. The change added a new carrier inside an already-supported country. No new EU country has been added to native support in 2026. BjornD, a Shopify staff member, promised a "large increase in carriers on Shopify that support pickup locations and lockers in the second half of 2026 and beyond" back in March. That commitment, as of this writing, has produced one UK carrier and zero new countries.

The practical read: if you are in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Baltic states, or anywhere in the Balkans, the native Shopify pickup points widget does not appear in your checkout. There is no toggle that enables it. There is nothing in Settings > Shipping and delivery that will produce it. You are on the app path, and the app path is where the second wall shows up.

The plan wall is where most non-Plus merchants give up

The second wall is the plan tier. We spent most of September walking merchants into the following finding, and it is now the single most expensive misunderstanding in this category: the checkout UI extension targets that would let an app render a pickup map or list inside the shipping step of a non-native checkout are gated to Shopify Plus. Not Grow. Not Advanced. Plus.

This is now confirmed from multiple directions. Shopify's own developer docs state it plainly: pickup points are available only for custom apps installed on development stores or on Shopify Plus plans, and public apps in the App Store are not eligible to build for pickup points at all. A merchant developer on the Advanced plan went further in a recent dev-community thread and asked Shopify Support directly. Support's response, relayed back on the thread, was that the entire Shipping category of extension targets, including shipping-option-list, shipping-option-item, delivery-address, and the pickup-location targets, requires Shopify Plus. Advanced plan does not open them up. Grow does not. Basic certainly does not.

The InPost by Tale Commerce developer put the same point in a 2025 review reply, in Polish, which translates to: "The pickup point map in checkout is available only for stores on the Shopify Plus plan. This restriction comes from the Shopify platform itself. When Shopify makes map integration available for all plans, we plan to add that feature." We have seen multiple merchants install this app expecting a map on the shipping step and find a text list of lockers instead. The map on the shipping step is a Plus feature.

So when a merchant on Grow or Advanced asks us why their third-party pickup app renders fine on their phone's dev preview but shows nothing on a live checkout, this is almost always the reason. The extension loads in preview. It is silently filtered out in production because the plan tier is not Plus.

The GraphQL gap that bites the fulfillment side

Even inside the four natively supported countries, there is a second surprise waiting on the API side. Shopify's admin UI happily shows the selected pickup location on an order, so you might reasonably assume you can read it the same way you read any other delivery attribute. You cannot. The GraphQL DeliveryMethod type does not expose a pickupPoint field, which means custom fulfillment code that wants to read Shopify pickup points off the delivery method hits a wall before it starts. If you query for it, you get: "Field 'pickupPoint' doesn't exist on type 'DeliveryMethod'." That is a direct quote from the error a developer named droidBilly posted in July, and it blocks every custom fulfillment integration that wants to read the locker ID straight off the delivery method.

Shopify added a deliveryOptionGeneratorPickupPoint field to the unstable API on July 31, but there is a trap in it: it returns the selected pickup point only when that point was generated by the requesting app's own delivery option generator. If Shopify's native picker placed the point, or if another app placed it, that field returns null. In practice this means the unstable field is useful only to Plus apps that are already rendering their own picker, which is the population that needed this least.

The workaround lumine suggested in the thread, matching the delivery destination address against the carrier's own location database, is the one we have seen hold up in practice. We would still call it a workaround, not a fix. If you are integrating fulfillment against the native picker, you want this on your risk register.

What actually works per plan tier right now

The app market around this gap moves quickly. The paragraphs below are current as of October 26, 2026, and we expect them to change again before the end of the quarter. If you are reading this in 2027, verify every plan requirement on the app's current listing before you install.

ShipWisely rewrote its approach on August 3, 2026 and now runs on any Shopify plan, including Basic. The trade is that it holds the order after checkout until the customer completes pickup selection. It ships with a Shopify Flow template that sends automated reminder emails on a timer. Rate requests at checkout dropped from around 2.1 seconds to under 0.5 seconds in the same release, which matters because slow carrier rate calls were the second-most-common reason we saw merchants abandon pickup setups. An August 12 release added Sidekick AI integration, so merchants can change an order's pickup point from the admin chat without opening the app. Carrier coverage is strong for Baltic and Eastern European carriers like Omniva, Venipak, and InPost. Mondial Relay is explicitly not supported.

Octolize Pickup Points PRO is the broadest app we currently point merchants toward for Shopify pickup points on standard plans. It covers 54 carriers across EU coverage and uses a tiered feature set keyed to your plan. On Basic, you get a pickup map on the cart page. On Grow and Advanced, you get a pickup list at checkout, provided your plan has Carrier Calculated Shipping. On Plus, you get a map or list at checkout. Pricing runs $9.99 per month on Basic to $39.99 on Plus. The important footnote: the Grow and Advanced checkout list is almost certainly implemented by generating individual rate options per locker, not by rendering a true embedded picker, because the embedded picker is Plus-gated as described above. That means a cluttered checkout with 10 to 30 shipping options rather than a map, but it does keep selection in the checkout flow.

InPost by Tale Commerce supports 11 countries (Austria, Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, UK) and requires Carrier Calculated Shipping, which rules out Basic. On non-Plus, you get the list, not the map. Best fit if you are already paying for a plan with CCS and your traffic is InPost-heavy.

Atlas Pickup Points is the same developer's broader multi-carrier offering, with 60+ carriers across 40 countries, including bpost (Belgium, Netherlands, France, Luxembourg) and Budbee (Nordics and Benelux). The plan requirements are less well documented on the public listing. Verify before installing.

Packstation & Paketshop PLUS by EC Web launched on April 20, 2026 for German merchants specifically. It integrates DHL Location Finder into checkout for Packstation, Paketshop, and Postfiliale, and will correct addresses entered through Shop Pay. Pricing starts at free (25 lookups per month) and tops out at $20 per month. No Plus requirement is stated on the listing. We have seen this one perform well for Germany-focused stores.

Across any of these, the UX trade keeps coming back to one choice: cart-page picker versus thank-you-page picker. The cart-page approach lets the customer pick before paying and keeps the fulfillment data clean, but it breaks the moment a customer uses Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, or Amazon Pay, because those flows bypass the cart entirely. The thank-you-page approach, which is what ShipWisely's new post-checkout hold uses, catches every customer regardless of payment method, at the cost of creating orders without pickup locations until the follow-up email lands. Digismoothie (Packeta integration) claims the thank-you-page flow still hits above 90% selection rates with a reminder email sent 15 to 75 minutes after checkout. We have not independently verified that number, and it will vary by market, but a Slovak merchant reviewing Globe Pickup Points in September 2026 wrote that moving selection to the cart reduced undelivered shipments at their store, which lines up with the direction of the trade.

If you are a solo or small-team merchant on Basic, Grow, or Advanced and you need a sanity check on which of these fits your market and your current plan before you install anything, that is exactly what the first 15 minutes with a help1 expert is for. We have seen the same five mistakes often enough that we can usually spot them in a shared screen.

A tangent for anyone also wrestling with Apple Pay specifically: pickup bypass by accelerated checkout flows is its own long-running Shopify quirk, and we wrote up four fixes for Shopify shipping setup when Apple Pay breaks pickup earlier this year. The combination of that bug with the pickup-point country wall is particularly brutal for stores in markets Shopify natively supports.

What we tell merchants to actually track

Three things, since the ground keeps shifting.

  1. Watch the Shopify changelog for any pickup-point entry that names a country not already on the list of four. The October 15 Royal Mail entry does not count; it is a UK carrier addition. A Germany, Poland, or Netherlands entry would be the first evidence that BjornD's H2 2026 commitment has started to produce country-level change.
  2. Watch the plan requirement line on your pickup app's listing. The Shopify-side extension gating is a platform decision Shopify can change at any time without warning, and when they do, every app in this category will pivot within a few weeks.
  3. Watch your own orders. If you have a pickup shipping rate and you are seeing orders arrive with the rate selected but no pickup location attribute, your current setup is quietly producing fulfillment problems. That signal is what our health scan looks for on the shipping side, and it is a cleaner tell than any customer complaint.

We should be honest about what we do not know. We have not personally shipped out of Latvia, Estonia, or Lithuania. The Baltic patterns in this piece are read off the Community threads, the carrier listings, and merchants who have described their setup to us; they are not from our own fulfillment experience. If you are a Baltic merchant with a working pickup setup on Shopify, we would genuinely like to hear what you ended up with.

Shopify pickup points look like a small configuration choice until the day you discover that your market, your plan, and your payment methods have each quietly removed one option from the menu until there is nothing left to pick.
